The trip across the North Sea to Sweden is becoming a regular part of the competition calendar for members of Kendal Judo Club. Just as regularly they come back with medals. The National Cup held in Halmstad was the event this time with nearly 250 young judoka taking part and Kendal was the only non-Swedish club partcipating.
Three of the Kendal players taking part came back with a medal. At Under 40 kilos Poppy Howe was first on the mat. Having fought Swedish players, Moa Wennstam and Hanna Stenberg the Kendal player sustained an ankle injury and had to be content with bronze.
The next Kendal player was Lauren Fox. Fighting in the Under 15 years Under 44kilo category she threw her first opponent, Gretha Ostlind, with a body drop throw and followed up immediately with a hold down for the full point. Her next opponent, Tova Granburg, proved to be a much stronger and at the end Lauren was unable to regain the small score against her. However she was still in the competition and following a contest against Felicia Bengtsson the Kendal player came up against Ellen Stenberg in the fight for bronze. Halfway through the contest a pin with a chest hold gave the medal to Lauren.
In her semi-final Daisy beat her Under 48kilo opponent Nora Nyby with a sweeping ankle throw for a half point and followed it up a few seconds later with a scarf-hold for the victory. Sadly in the final against JK National player, Wilma Rossel, a moment’s lapse of concentration allowed the Swedish competitor to counter an attack from Daisy which meant a silver medal for the Kendal player.
