Lakeland open on the internet
Saturday, 22 August 2009
Kendal Judo Club member Adam Dixon took part in the Lakeland Open championships and ended up in an internet experiment.
His father, who usually accompanies him to many of his competitions, could not watch him this time, having to be at a Steam Gathering in the middle of a field near Lincoln.
But thanks to the magic of modern technology he was still able to see Adam fight on his lap-top computer thanks to 'Judo Technologies.'
For those of you who have not come across the firm before they are Stephan and Ben Newbury who have written computer software to aid the smooth running of judo competitions. They came to the Lakeland Open with an experiment to stream live pictures of the event on to the internet.
Sadly Adam had a really tough draw and did not win a medal this time but the experiment, the first time judo has ever been shown live on the world-wide-web in Britain was a huge success. During the day Ben received numerous e-mails asking when particular players were due to fight so they could watch them on their computers. When one of the Scottish competitors won a final judging by the e-mail response there seemed to be as many watching the fight on their computers as were in the arena
Notwithstanding the quality of the competition medals still went to Kendal with the Lenney family, Katherine and Matthew, managing a bronze medal each. Aaron Asplin also managed a bronze medal.
Sarah Porterhouse shook off being thrown in the fastest time of the day to also win a bronze medal.
