Scottish Crown for Michael Horley - Silver for Danny Harper
Wednesday, 19 November 2008
Following their "disappointing" performance in Wales Michael and Danny were given extra training sessions by Mike Liptrot to help concentrate their minds.
Double and sometimes triple timed runs up and round Kendal Castle in all weathers plus extra contest practice did the trick as Michael came back from the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on October 31st with the Scottish Championship and Danny just failed to equal this in his Final.
Horley easily saw off the German Burgmann in hi first contest and without many problems progressed to the final where he met up with Frenchman Thibault Durand.
The contest started dramatically with the Frenchman tearing his trousers in the firs thiry seconds. Having changed it was not long before he was picking himself off the mat Michael having countered an attack by the Frenchman with a throw of his own for Ippon and the Gold medal.
Danny was in excellent form throwing his first opponent in under a minute. It took slightly longer to strangle Welshman Emyr Ap Sian in his next fight. He then met and beat Polish competitor Bocian Krezeminski with Morote Gari. This put him into the semi-final against Patrick Dawson who had beaten him in the Welsh Open two weeks previously.
There was no doubt who was going to win this time when Danny picked up his opponent and dumped him on his back with te guruma for Ippon.
Danny met long time rival Owen Livesey in the final and a minor score against the Kendal player left Danny with a well deserved silver medal.
Kendal Coach Mike Liptrot had to concede when asked that both players had fought well and he might be a little easier with the training routines during the week.
