GB No. 2 Position for Michael Horley
Wednesday, 19 November 2008
A potentially disastrous Hansoku Make decision for an"alleged" head dive sixteen seconds into his first fight nearly had Michael Horley out of the Senior Trials before he had even drawn breath.
However despite the direct hansoku he was allowed to continue and he made up for the error during the rest of the day.
Michael easily saw off Craig Holmes from Dartford and Micholi Daley from Erdington, the former with a tremendous Seoi Nage and the latter with two waza-ari throws.
Into the second round pool he was up against the eventual winner Jonathan Purssey. Having scored a koka the Pinewood player cut his eye. With the officials allowing him nearly ten minutes to recover this put Michael out of his ryhthm and could not recover.
Michael's next contest was against ex-British Open champion Bobby Rich from the Budokwai who had put Michael out of this event last year so it was sweet revenge when Michael threw him for ippon with O Uchi Gari.
In the final pool the contest against Jonathan Purssey carried forward but wins against two Midlanders Will Kelly and Luke Taylor saw Michael as the No2 in the country and having a place on the National Squad.
