Mike Liptrot Produces DVD for Beginners
Tuesday, 13 May 2008
Nowadays there are numerous DVDs on the market which give coaching for competitive players, usually aimed at Dan Grades. There are very few which are aimed at the newcomer to our sport.
Mike Liptrot has produced just such a DVD. Made by Summersdale Productions who are well known in the martial arts DVD field, it is called "Beginning Judo" and is an excellent introduction to our sport.
Mike starts by showing breakfalls but not the usual " this is a forward / backward breakfall now copy it" but separates each part of the breakfall into its component pieces.
Mike then goes on to demonstrate some basic techniques such as Tai Otoshi, Osoto Gari/Gake, O Goshi as well as Mune Gatame, Kesa Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame each time showing the throw piece by piece before putting it all back together. He then shows how to combine the throw with the ground work.
For beginners it is an excellent introduction. There are no frills, no fancy video tricks and the production is the better for that.
