Entries Boys: North West, North
Girls: North West, North
This was an extremely disappointing entry. The Western Area did consider sending a girls team but when they discovered there were only two other teams they decided that they could not justify the cost for just two contests. London Area except they were in the process of electing a new committee so there was no-one in a position to organise a team. Northern Home Counties Committee decided they could not afford the cost. As the North West Area always enter a team, no matter where in the country the event is held (last year it was in Crawley), I find the latter reason inexcusable.
Men's Teams:North West, North, South, Scotland, Combined Services, Police
Women's Teams:North West, North, South, Scotland, Combined Services
Last Year’s winners (East) were notable absentees.
Saturday Contests: Saturday’s contests were fairly low key. Nonetheless they produced some good judo and the supporters helped give the day some atmosphere.
In The Boys Event the North West team had a fairly comfortable victory 8 wins – 75 points to 3 wins – 25 points.
The Girls event was much closer. Both teams could not produce a full team, there were four weights on each side not contested. The contest went to the last fight. Whichever team won secured the title. Unfortunately the North West player sustained an injury during the contest and had to withdraw which meant the Northern Team were the victors 5 wins – 50 points to 4 wins – 37 points.
All four lots of players then had a three hour training session.
Sunday Contests: There was a much more charged atmosphere on the second day. It was decided, with the consent of all teams to run both the Men & Women’s contests as one pool each (Six for the Men, 5 for the Women) giving a total of 25 Team Contests.
In the Men’s Event the North West Team won all their Team Contests and ran out fairly easy winners 5 Team wins – 29 Individual Wins – 180 Points. The competition for the rest of the medal places was very tight. The last contest of the day between the North West and Scotland played a decisive part in the result. Eventually the North ran out Silver Medallists 3 Team wins – 17 Individual Wins – 162 Points. In third place were Combined Services 3 Team wins – 16 individual wins – 157 points. Fourth were the South 2 Team Wins – 16 individual wins – 160 points.
The Women’s competition was equally close. Scotland were the victors winning their four fights by 4 wins – 19 Individual wins – 162 points. The Silver medal went to the South with 3 team wins – 19 individual wins – 187 points. The next two teams – North and the Combined Services both had 1 team win – 10 individual wins – 95 points for the bronze medal. The North West Team also had 1 team win but only 7 individual wins and 90 points.
