Cox & Allen Building Contractors
Cox & Allen was originally formed in 1965, as a partnership between B.W. Cox & H.F. Allen to carry out stonewalling contracts along the new roads and bypasses that were being built at the time; their first project being on the A66 at Keswick. As the business expanded into general building works, the partnership effectively became 3 different businesses, Cox & Allen Kendal, Cox & Allen Morland and A&C Damp-proofing. Brian Cox operated the Kendal based business and Fraser Allen operating both the Morland based business and the Damp-proofing business. In the late 70’s it was clear that, following rapid growth, the Kendal based business, operated by Brian Cox, was growing more rapidly than the parts operated by Fraser Allen, so in 1980 Brian & Fraser dissolved the partnership, but with Brian retaining the rights to continue trading as “Cox & Allen” and Fraser trading as “A&C Damp-proofing”. The rapid growth continued and in 1982 Brian decided to incorporate the company, registering at Companies House as “Cox & Allen (Kendal) Ltd”. In 1985 the company moved from Castle Street, Kendal, to its current location on Shap Road Industrial Estate, which saw the expansion of the Builders’ Yard, Plant/Vehicle workshop, Joinery workshop & Offices.
Brian Cox retired from an active role in the company at the end of 1999, Gary Davis & Michael Leahy effectively sharing the role of Managing Director and Gary also filling the role of Co. Secretary. Since Brian’s retirement last year, the Directors have made a significant investment in new plant, equipment and IT provision, including an office “Intra-net”, Broad Band access to the web and e-mail. It is important to stress that continuing contact with our clients and design teams, during construction and following up after
