Alan Campbell

Along with Arthur Mayo, Alan was Kendal Judo Club's founder member.

Nineteen year old Alan took up judo after going to a demonstration of the sport given by Bill Armstrong from Barrow Judo Club in the YMCA in Highgate (the big building opposite the bedding shop) in 1957. read more

Gary Davis

Gary is the Club's President he is also a Trustee of the Club. A trustee is responsible for the overall running of the club, particularly the finance. read more

Michael Horley -- The Japanese Experience

Mike (Jurgan) Horley recently returned from Japan where he took part in the Japanese World Cup Grand Slam and also visited, with the Great Britain Team, several University Dojos for training sessions. Here he recounts the experience:- read more

Mike Liptrot

Mike Liptrot is the name and face most immediately associated with the current club and Dojo. He is the Chief Coach and as such is in charge of all the instruction and coaching from the youngest to the oldest member whether they are recreational players or top class competitors. read more

Nick Hill

Nick is the oldest of the club's members who are still competing. Aged 57 in 2008 he started learning the sport as a seventeen year old.
His first sensei was Richard Barraclough at Stretford, Manchester and he went from yellow belt to Dan Grade in 3 years. He gained his 2nd Dan in 1984
He won the National College Championships as a blue belt during his second year in Judo. read more

Peter Holme

Peter started judo in September 1964 at an Allen Technical College Evening Class run by Alan Campbell.
He attained his 1st Dan in 1973 (You could only attend a Dan Grading once every three months in those days and there were very few point scoring competitions). He got his 2nd Dan in January 1978. read more

Tony Macconnell

Tony took up judo in 1956. He was a keen cyclist and a member of the YMCA. One day having finished some training he looked in on a room with a group of judo players being taught by Ken Morris. Ken was a small man but when Tony said he would like a go he was thrown all over. Tony was hooked. read more
